Victim of Smoking Ban

The tragic death of former British Heavy weight Boxing champion James Oyebola was reported as being a direct result of the draconian smoking ban. This highlights the dangers to ordinary people being forced to police a hugely unpopular law.

Were these dangers taken into account when this law was brought into society? If so would any politician or local councillors or indeed members of Ash be prepared to offer their services to Pubs Clubs Retaurants etc to help them to enforce their law ? I VERY MUCH DOUBT THEY WOULD HAVE THE COURAGE REQUIRED. The lies about second hand smoke even if true present a far less danger than the unpaid policing that people like Mr Oyebola had to face.. We would like to praise his courage and offer our deepest sympathy to his family and friends for their tragic and we feel unnecessary loss.

*****Since this tragic death and many other incidences of violence instigated by this smoking ban there has come into our possession a copy of what was recommended to politicians by the experts.Ian Stuart Gray is the Principle Policy Officer Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. H has been in charge of smokefree policies for 20 years and has been the recipient of several awards for model practice. So he obviously is well respected by New Labour.

So much so that he was the CIEH representative in all matters concerning the governments proposals for smokefree legislation. In particular he considered the government's published proposals in detail and he carried out consultations amongst the CIEH membership and other individuals and organisations with environmental health interests. He wrote the formal response on behalf of the CIEH to the government's consultation and he made both written submissions and oral presentations to the House of Commons Health Select Committee. He was the principal contributor to the national guidance document implementation of smoke free legislation in England issued by the Local Authority Coordinators and Regulatory Standards (LACORS) He designed and delivered training packages for both local authority service managers responsible for securing compliance with the smokefree legislation and for the officers who were to be authorised to carry out the enforcement measures under a training contract CIEH as with the Department of Health. He further states that Section8(5) of the Health Act 2006 provides that it is a defence for a person having control of a smokefree premises or vehicle to show that it was reasonable for them not to comply with the duty to stop persons from smoking. It has been the advice of theCIEH that the occasions on which this defence is raised are likely to be unique upon their own facts and therefore are not likely to be something upon which general advice can be given. The examples which CIEH have provided HAVE INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING

In relation to premises: where it is claimedby a person who hascontrol or is concerned in the management of smoke-free premises, and is therefore required to cause a person to to stop smoking, and the issues raised were that is that he fears for his personal safety in this matter. If he alleges that he considered he would be in genuine fear for his safety or reprisals (loss of custom?) for asking a person to stop he could offer this as a defence.

Now that applies to every publican in the country. But when the councils use bully boy tactics they fail to tell publicans about these recommendations by the experts. But then they would wouldn't they? Although this is the get out clause that the MP's used so that they can smoke in the many Parliamentary bars!!

Mr Gray further states that when advising the Government he understood that before signing it in as law the MP's would sign a statement declaring that in their opinion the legislation is compatible with Human Rights. If they signed that in their honest opinion it did not infringe the Civil Liberties of 12million people ,then they should not be MP's.It would show they have no idea of the hardships this would cause to 12 million + smokers and the dangers faced by people who have to implement this unjust law. The Italian High court has thrown out this legislation on exactly those grounds and we hope the English Judicary will show the same justice to us. If Gordon and co will allow them to !!.But as usual Gordon ignored the experts they had hired with taxpayers money and went their own way. Leading to untold stress violence and loss of trade for those who pay their wages. Smokers will remember come election time.

Gordon’s visions are becoming more dangerous by the day. To-day, (New Years Day), headlines state that his new plans for the NHS include barring treatment for any person who does not come up to his idea of who is entitled to care in his NHS. Anybody who smokes, drinks or eats too much may find themselves being turned away when needing medical treatment. He is in fact telling Doctors to tear up the Hippocratic Oath and treat patients who come up to his vision of who deserves treatment. So if you like a smoke or are fat or have a tipple then you are in trouble. His idea of curing the Health service’s dismal record is to punish the sick, regardless of the fact that they pay NHS contributions and therefore have a right to expect treatment. Obviously the Doctors will be told not to take your word that you don’t do any of these bad things but to ‘check’ you out. So if you have cancer, or some other terrible illness, but you are naturally fat, it will delay your treatment while it is established if you are telling the truth. His new contract, for the NHS, is that it is your duty to keep yourself healthy He will sign this contract on your behalf and if you break it then you must go away and find somewhere to die. This is his idea of solving problems in the NHS. Tell the people to go to the gym, and tell the bugs, that are killing people who do get admitted to hospital, to go away. What does he intend doing about all the youngsters with Chlamydia? Send them for the new re-virginalising operations? Or will he simply ban sex!! Is he going to tell his Friends who run the supermarkets to stop selling foods loaded with fat and risk losing their donations? No way. Or is he going to tell all those MP’s, drinking & smoking in the many Westminster Palace’s bars and restaurants, that they will be refused treatment if they get sick. No way. They come under a different set of rules to the rest of us which is why they alone are allowed to smoke and drink and be gluttons whenever they feel like it. Take a look at the wine on offer to Gordon’s guests at No 10 !! You pay for it.
It is becoming increasingly obvious that this lot are spending so much time creating new laws to take away all of our civil liberties, and now our health care, that there is little time left to run the country. It seems he has been put in His place by big business and told to control the people and play his dictator games, leaving Them to do as they will. He has taken their orders and just concentrates on bullying. Is that what we expect from a leader? To just tell us not to smoke, not to eat too much, not to drink too much; To get as much money from us by stealth taxes and fines. These are all things tried by other people, Hitler, Stalin and their ilk. They all lost in the end and so will he. His own party will see sooner or later that he is going to lose their jobs and perks for them, and they will oust him. It’s up to you to bombard your MPs to tell them Enough is Enough. More and more people are getting sick through the stress of trying to survive under this shambles of a Government. All the propaganda they put out, that it is hedonists that are crippling the NHS, that all the crime is committed by people just to get money for drugs. Does he not know that burglars have rent and bills to pay, or that they want designer clothes and have the same bills to pay as the rest us?
How much longer are you all going to put up with this lot. At the moment the only party that is attempting to safeguard our civil liberties is the Lib Dems who are opposing the intrusive ID cards, that Gordon so badly wants. Or his masters so badly want! So why not give the Lib Dems your vote. They cannot possibly be any worse than this lot of corrupt sleazy bastards. Send Gordon back to the Pulpit and let him preach ‘the end is nigh’ back in Scotland. He might learn something there. The Health care in Scotland and Wales is far better than it is in England. Many lifesaving drugs are available there, that are not in England, and furthermore Wales doesn’t rake in billions in prescription charges!!!
Does Brown have any idea of how many NHS drugs are posted from here to the folks back home, in other countries, that do not contribute to the NHS? It is not rocket science to go to a GP and ask for drugs and then post them home, either for relatives or sale on the black-market. But if he starts checking on those, he might fall foul of Labour’s PC laws. (Does not discriminating against fat people come under any PC laws? So the NHS has a further burden put on it.
But having said all this I would like to remind you that we told you in July that the attack on Civil Liberties would not stop with the smoking ban. I hope there are plenty of fatties in Ash!!!

Once upon a time there were but 10 Commandments

Now the smoking police are adding their own - It has been reported in the Morning Advertising that a pub with a beer garden has placed a smoking ban enforcer on the door to ensure that smokers are only allowed 5 minutes of smoking time and then they go back inside the pub and spend some more money, by order of the management. Will anybody use this pub? Not any of our readers I HOPE!!

I suspect the smoking guide lines will soon be thicker than the Bible, with far more Disciples to boot!

What about cigar smokers? or are they banned?

She only asked for a light!!!!

Obviously this headline is taking the piss out of the powers that be . But if you look at the viciousness in the police woman's/man face, it shows you the Britain of today. It's not hard to imagine the future. It shows that New Labour's guff about political correctness. What a load of********* the look on this policewoman's/ man face (who is a civil servant and apparently human) shows what Labour means by PC:-

Public Compliance!! you will obey or else we will set the animals on you. And we are not talking about the poor horse. that doesn't seem to be enjoying it as much as the police woman/man?

Brown's Dream is our Nightmare - TOTALITARIANISM! THINK OF YOUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE. IS THIS THIS THE TYPE OF LEGACY YOU WANT TO LEAVE THEM? ALTHOUGH lABOUR IS TAKING OVER YOUR CHILDREN'S LIVES AS WELL NOW.

Now police are told they can use Tazer guns on children

"You'd better hope that nappy isn't wet you punk, or you will really feel this", " and if I catch your 12 year old brother smoking he'll get some as well !!"

This is the type of policing we used to see in other countries that were run by tyrants and despots, not in the UK. All our freedoms were hard fought for over centuries. Electrocuting our children? How do they brainwash the police into doing this? Its a good job we don't have chimneys anymore or they would be pushing children up them again.Look at this picture and the picture earlier , of Dixon of Dock Green on horseback and you should feel very concerned for your children. It seems that the first thing they do now to new police recruits is to operate on them to remove their conscience.Do the police not realise that their children and their childrens children will have to live in this world that they are happy to help create..

OH! YES, SECOND HAND SMOKE IS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH

Daley Thomson banned from promoting Little Chef's Olympic breakfast
...not because it's unhealthy but because 2012 chiefs have already signed lucrative deal with McDonald's

Much better to live a healthy lifestyle . At least I thought that was the aim of the Olympic committee. To promote a healthy life style to the young. Can you imagine the scene as 10 athletes go past at 50mph. One official to the other " was that the 100 metres?" "No" said the other," they have a special on for a big Mac and fries!!" Don't these bastions of our sports know that this is the worst type of diet to encourage kids to eat? One burger full of fats & sugars & growth hormones will do them far more damage than a whiff of smoke that is diluted before it gets to them. And that's a fact!!

But the real reason Daley can't earn a few quid with Little Chef is because The Olympic committee has done a deal with another of New Labour's friend, Bush's, country's company McDonalds .I wonder if Big Mac will win gold in the Caber Tossing?!!. They have the power to do this because New Labour passed yet another law making it illegal for Daley to advertise the Olympics for any one other than Big Mac. It is now a criminal offence, punishable by a ?20,000 fine to advertise without the Olympic committee's permission and fee of course. Police can seize goods such as advertising material, with the aid of Hazer Guns no doubt,! and then charge for their time!! Advertisers risk prosecution and being sued if they use words such as 'summer', 'games' and 2012'. Can you believe how much time this took on taxpayers money to work this act out? The mind boggles How will Tony's friend Cliff Richards get on with his famous " we're all going on a SUMMER holiday " song? So now New Labour are not only banning words such as freedoms and choice from the English language but lots of other words too. We will soon be back to 'children (as they deem us to be) should be seen but not heard'. Well I don't fancy a greasy big mac but I am now stopping for a smoke!!

Peoples Jury

So Gordon is going to listen to the people is he? He is going to take the peoples views into account before making decisions and yet more laws that affect peoples lives in so many different ways. Rarely for the better.!! Or will he cherry pick' the answers, as they have done with the smoking ban? His lackies have been telling the media and therefore the public that 80% of the public agreed with the smoking ban. Well neither I, nor any of the 1000's of signatures of 'real people' that we have collected, have been asked and do in fact, disagree with the ban. 30% of our survey signees are in fact non smokers and want their right of choice given back to them. More importantly, they want New Labour to honour their Manifesto pledges on this matter. As a member of the public,& therefore a member of the peoples jury, I wish to state my view of politicians. Namely, that I always know when a politician is lying. His lips move!! When Gordon talks of truth he does not say " this is the Gospel truth" does he? As he tells us that he wants us to live by his Presbyterian values it would be nice if he led by example. Surely obtaining a persons vote by lying to them constitutes a crime in itself. Obtaining by means of a false pretence, contrary to one of his many laws!! I am sure that we, the jury, would find him guilty as charged. Gordon, I rest my case! And I suspect smokers in their millions will show New Labour come election time.

November 2007 Oh! what a week Dictator Brown is having. All the skullduggery is catching up with them. They made our lives a misery with all the scare tactics to enable them to close down our lives with the ever invasive security. The absolute misery at airports when we try to escape this poxy country for a short break to see how much freedom other countries have. Waste of time rub downs that serve no purpose except to degrade us and our loved ones Xray machines to look through our wives and childrens clothing! takiing off of shoes (sometimes) Do they not know what the so called terrorists look like? And who does he employ to do all these degrading things to us .Yes you've guessed it. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS!! SECURITY? A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS. SIMPLY TO GET US USED TO THE FACT THAT THEY CAN DO WHAT THEY LIKE TO US! So they tried the normal cover ups & lies as usual waiting for the media to move on to another story. They did only this was another story of Government incompetence.Once you get past the big brother tactics which we allow them to force upon us you see just how incompetent they are. The Inland Revenue lost all this informance they have been stockpiling on us. How did they lose it? In the post they said. IN THE POST? WE COULD ALL HAVE TOLD THEM THAT THE POST IS VERY UNRELIABLE. Thanks to Government policies. Thats why we use other methods. oh! it wasn't Postman Pat's fault after all.It was their trusted illegal security staff? They pry & spy on us,obtain all our details and then bloody lose them!! And this is the lot that want ID cards. For security of course. Could it be, maybe, that some civil servant does not like what is going on in England and simply wiped the discs clean. What a lovely thought eh? the best laid plans of mice & politicians oft go astray!! Cos they would tell us if this is the case wouldn't they ? Then we come to another beauty?

Funds for Gordons moneybox! We have a very generous donor who gives £600000 but doesn't want anything in return, so he puts it in someone else's name. A couple of lowly paid workers are claimed to have donated it. And, they also didn't expect the odd peerage, or contract or two. It has since been uncovered that in fact Mr Abrahams does need a little help via the Friends of Israel and of course our English government who don't have many friends but plenty of undercover donors Every day the amounts get bigger & bigger. Some poor sod has to resign and say it was his fault. But that did not satisfy the press. Although the Sunday Mail did not say who tipped them off about this 'nice little earner'. Another person with a conscience, maybe, that didn't want to bring down Gordons wrath on himself ? Not only was it devious, it was also illegal. But Gordon didn't know about it of course & ' he wouldn't lie to you baby' because he is a devout christian and wants open politics. Why would he be interested in a mere £600,000, He leaves that piffling amount to his underlings. Especially, illegal dealings that the press were not supposed to find out about. Anyway it's no problem. He has said sorry and is going to return the money & check the books, no doubt to see if there are any other discrepancies. Being the clever man that he is, he has also solved the overcrowding in prisons with this one. Because if all the bank robbers & other criminals would follow suit, and appologise and give back the loot when they are caught, there would be no need for expensive prisons and even more expensive lawyers and judges. As the old proverb says 'it takes a thief to catch a thief'. Or a criminal to solve the crime problem. So all you criminals out there, please write your letter of apology addressed to Justice Minister Jack 'many hats' Straw. give the money back, and with a bit of luck you might be home for xmas!!. That will stop 'call me Dave' Cameron from pestering Gordon with silly questions like 'what are you doing about the crime rate?' I bet the Tories wish they'd have thought of this novel way of emptying the prisons!!

Then we had the Armed forces criticising Gordon for the lack of funds for the troops that are risking their lives for his policies, or rather his lack of the courage to refuse to back whosever policies they are in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are plenty of European Governments that have refused to send troops into battle, in a war based on lies. The new Spanish leader pulled his troops out. But Gordon doesn't have that sort of courage. Nor will he share any of his secret funds with the brave soldiers who are doing his bidding. If he was to just take £1 out of the fines he is raking in from his war on motorists, and donate it to the armed forces, we would have the best equipped army in the world. Yet he has the audacity to put a £15 surcharge inthe courts on all the other fines for the victims of crime. Regardless of the fact that in many of these cases there are no victims. Just another cash grab. Give this to the soldiers they are most certainly victims. Victims of his policies. We have not heard of any cutbacks to the politicians money have we? Or we could give him, and his gang, a rifle and send him out to show us how to fight this war on a shoestring. Not much chance of that happening though!! He has impersonated Stalin in his surveillance society, Hitler in his Smoking ban edicts, Mussolini in his food dictates (although he doesn't have the courage to take on Tesco & Sainsbury's, and the like, on thier GM in our food chain, against the peoples wishes by the way!), BUT not Ghengis Khan just in case he is given a rifle and sent to Afghanistan!! But then he doesn't have a personality of his own, or any idea of what running the country is all about

Extra* It has just been revealed, by Gordon? no no, don't be silly, by the London Evening Standard, that Tescos donated £11 million to the millenium dome via LLM (A LOBBYING COMPANY JOINED TO THE FRIENDS OF ISRAEL) WHO WERE THEN SAVED £40MILLION WHEN MINISTERS WERE PERSAUDED TO DROP PLANS FOR A TAX ON SUPERMARKET CAR PARKS. NOW YOU SEE HOW GORDON WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS. HE DIDN'T LEARN THAT FROM HIS FATHERS PULPIT!

This is Gordon hard at work hustling up a few quid for his money box. With all his hunter gatherers.Lord Levy , the Friends of Israel, The property devoloper and secret donor Mr Abrahams who is seeking planning permision for a new shopping plaza, and the new fundraiser Mr Jon Mendelsohn. They look particulary chummy. But then who wouldn't be chummy with Mendelsohn with the funds he can pull in! This is the way Gordon's government runs.Hard work by the look of it!! You however will just have to be content with our" petition your MP". button

November 2007 Already the ban is starting to bite. Many pubs are facing ruin, much to Brown's delight. Any publican that hasn't yet woken up to the fact that pubs are going to be a thing of the past, deserve to lose their business. They have just rolled over and done nothing i.e petitoning their customers or joining sites, such as ours, to help to protect their livelihoodsThe only way the Government can take over our lives is because of the complete apathy amongst the electorate. Is England really this braindead? It would seem so. All they have to do is to petition their MP's and ask which party is going to stop this erosion of our way of life and then vote accordingly. Publicans are if only they would realise it in a position to canvas all their customers who in turn could enrol their own family freinds and work colleagues into getting rid of politicians who won't represent them in the way they want them to. Wake up before it's too late. Brown is unelected and intends to stay this way if he is allowed to. Wouldn't you if you could justsneak into a top job and keep it? Gordon Brown made sure that nobody else challenged for PM .How he did this is anybodies guess. There must have been at least one other Labour politician who felt he was up to the job but sadly lacked the courage to run against Brown. The recent turnaround of Lord West proved that. Stating his beliefs on radio and 1 hour later, after a bollicking from Brown changed his mind. That is the future of this country. One mans view Thats how most dictators begin. This man is the nearest that England has ever come to having a dictator rule us. Wake up England.Think of your children and your grandchildren.

All in all it hasbeen a rough ride for Gordon but he will not admit he is not up to the job. He is fuming that somebody was audacious enough to start prying and spying into his dealings. Now he knows how we all feel with all the invasions and snooping on our private lives. Not nice is it Gordy. And we don't have anyone sneaking us £100 's of thousands of pounds through the back door. His integrity is shot to pieces yet still he hangs on unelected and unwanted .He is such a control freak that he knows full well about all the dirty and often illegal money grabbing that is going on. How can someone who is so biblical be involved in these dirty politics. Surely he above all the others in his gang should be truthful.

It seems he only likes the parables in the bible. We all know that the real meaning of a parable is an untruth so is it any wonder at the way he behaves? He has been brought up on parables and all his visions of how England should be run is on a porridge and parable base.

This last week in November he has become a laughing stock in Parliament by his fellow politicians. He has been referred to as Mr Bean. At the same time he is thinking of declaring war on Iran (on a shoestring no doubt) How can we possibly allow a man like this to carry on in this job. He has declared war on the British people with his dictatorial rule by attacking all our Civil Liberties. He blames it on terrorism. Well if the definition of terrorism is the loss of our freedoms by force then New Labour has proved itself to be the biggest terrorist organization this country has ever been threatened by. Never has a country been taken over with so little resistance by it's population. We are behaving like lambs and deserve what we are getting. Bombard the MP's. We want a change now. Gordon will fold under pressure like most bully boys. Tell him we don't like his visions .They stink. They are bloody parables.

In the commons this week he was asked what he would like for Xmas."A day off "he replied. Yes you are right, everyone could see what the reponse to that was going to be!. Everyone but Gordon that is. " well take plenty of days off ,PLEASE" was the response in the House. Amid much laughter, even from his own side he walked straight into the trap with his answer. Funny yes.But this is the man who wants to negotiate a war where many people will lose their lives. Taken in this context it's not so funny is it. The man is a walking disaster. He has no wit whatsoever. There are no jokes in the bible only parables. You cannot rule the lives of millions of people on quotes from the pulpit Sling him out. Let him go apply for his father's old job. He has been indoctrinated all his life for that job.We don't want to be converted. We simply want to get on with our lives with as little State interferance as possible. This is one life that we get, it is not a trial run. It is hard enough to get some pleasures out of it amidst all the financial day to day struggles, caused by his ilk, without him taking away those small pleasures. Like having a smoke and a pint!

We must tell him at the ballot box that everyone else saw George Orwell's 1984 as a horror story. Gordon and New Labour think it is the new,New Testament. He read it with glee and thought " now thats what I call power" He spends every hour of his life bringing 1984 to England. We are the most spied upon country in the world. He really thinks that is what his job is all about. Well come election time, if he allows it, we must tell him and his successor Enough is Enough!! Since New Labour have been in power they have spent the whole of their tenure bringing in new laws to take away our hard won Civil Liberties and apart from starting a war on lies, have done very little else. Nothing that can be seen to have enhanced our lives. I will be very careful who I give my vote to next time. There are 12million smokers out there who are voters +many non smokers who want their lives and choices back.Make your vote count. With that many votes ,you ,can dictate to the politicians the meaning of Civil Servants and make them work for you, instead of against you. You can make this a better country for yourselves, your children and your childrens children. Preach our gospel in as many places as you can. Not Browns Gospel. You pay the politicians wages make them earn them!!! Under Brown England is just Fine Fine Fine, Fine for parking your car!, Fine for having a smoke,!Fine for dropping a piece of paper! Extra Fine for not being able to pay a Fine!! etc etc etc!!!

And now for another of our 'Masters', as he loved TO CALL HIMSELF

' It was this big, trust me I'm a politician.Would I lie to you baby?'

Michael Howard was, as he often told us on T.V., the most successful Home Secretary for many years. He was talking about the crime issue. Quote: 'During my time as Home Secretary 1993-96 statistics show that the crime rate was down' This was very true. Is this the first politician to tell us the truth? Can we finally believe what our rulers tell us? Sadly no! The real truth is somewhat different. In 1993 the Open Borders policy came into force. Dave West & I were among the forerunners in the cross channel Booze & cigarette trade.. Indeed, we were the first British company to open in Calais. This suddenly provided a ready made way of making a living for  many  thousands  of  unemployed  people in   Great Britain. Thousands of vans cars & trucks from Scotland ,Wales, Ireland and the whole of England descended on Dover, Felixstowe & Hull. England & France had seen nothing like this since the Normandy landings of World War II. The queues were endless. The ferries were running at full capacity 24/7. Britain was alive again. There were parties galore. Hire companies did not have enough vehicles so they put in large orders with the manufacturers, Garages were selling millions of gallons of petrol & diesel. So any tax that was lost from beer & cigarettes was more than compensated by the petrol etc taxes. The people who had previou his job issly been robbing houses etc suddenly had jobs and a way of earning money almost legally! So the only real recordable increase in crime was a bit of tax evasion which as said was made up in other ways. The supermarkets were forced to reduce their vastly inflated prices on beer from £28 a case to the present day prices of £7 Who benefited? The British Public THAT'S WHO!!! BUT POOR OLD MICHAEL DIDN'T KNOW THIS DID HE? Come on Mick give credit where credit is due. Stealing somebody else's credit is stealing just the same. You would have made a great New Labour politician. Any way the moral (now there's a new word for today's politicians) of the story is that booze & cigarettes put Britain back on it's feet again New cars mortgages etc, less crime smiling faces. Surely a lesson for the politicians. Give the public a chance and it works. Is this really so hard for them to work out. Simple economics that the voters understand and demand. Leave the health issues to the gp's You are supposed be getting the country on the move. Give us our freedoms and earn your money. Come on Dave Cameron show New Labour how to do it.Oh! yes and what about Michael's other great idea, to take away driving licences from young criminals. If they had one in the first place that is ! BY THE VERY DEFINITION OF THE WORDS YOUNG OFFENDERS DID HE REALLY THINK THEY WOULD CARE? No they would just have driven anyway but without insurance. What world do these guys live in? You can bet your bottom dollar that he voted for the ban!!!

First rebel publicans go to court

In November, the first of the publicans to be prosecuted for allowing smoking in their pubs will go to court.

First up is Hamish Howitt in Blackpool. The Council may have thought it funny to have a smoking related issue be scheduled for 5th November but Hamish has had the last laugh and officially changed his name to Hamish Guy Fawkes Howitt. He will appear at 10am at the Magistrates Court, Bonny Street, Blackpool. There will be a fair number of us outside the Court to give him our support and we have a few colourful ideas in mind. We also expect plenty of press and TV coverage so if you're able to come along, do so and join in.

Next up is Nick Hogan from Bolton due in court on 12th November. Both of these brave guys are putting their businesses, livelihoods and families on the line for what they believe in which is that the law restricting smoking in pubs is wrong. They want to run their businesses without draconian legislation. By extension, they are therefore standing up for my rights and yours.

If you can't get to the Courts on those days but want to show your support, please write to them, with a donation to their legal costs if you can, or email their MPs.

Hamish Howitt, The Happy Scots Bar, 9, Rigby Road, Blackpool FY1 5DE

Nick Hogan, The Swan, 2-4, Churchgate, Bolton, Lancs

Other looming prosecutions will follow for Tony Blows in Herefordshire and Dana Hewitt in Walsall. We wish all of them success.

Rebel publican updates.

Hamish went to court as scheduled and reluctantly took the advice of his solicitor to plead guilty. The judge fined him 100 pounds on 5 counts of allowing smoking in his pub, plus costs of 2000 pounds, plus of course the Victim Surcharge of 15 pounds. Another 7 offences were held back for future consideration should Hamish be charged again.

Hamish left the court and gave interviews to the press and BBC TV on the court steps. He said he would continue to allow smoking in his pub as his conscience wouldn't let him throw people out into the cold, the wind and the rain. Then it was back to the pub where everyone lit up with the TV cameras still filming and was later shown on local news and BBC News 24.

Sure enou gh, 2 days later, the officials went back to visit the pub and Hamish will be back in court in very soon. This time he will speak for himself and plead not guilty.

Nick Hogan's case was adjourned until January. He said "It was -4 degrees last night. You can't throw people outside. It's just wrong."

He added " I want to make this clear. I am not permitting smoking at the pub.I am advising people that they risk getting a fine if they do smoke. But what I refuse to do is physically remove people from the pub for smoking because it could amount to common assault."

Surely this is a way forward for other publicans? The Government thought they were pretty smart to get the landlord/publicans to do the policing for them. But, if a publican forcibly removes a smoker from the pub, it could be classed as common assault or a breach of Health & Safety rules regarding putting your staff in a possibly dangerous situation.

And more Guy Fawkes news....

This is a short article from the Independent which tells of yet another British tradition going up in smoke. And with Christmas approaching, no doubt there will be similar stories, as there were last year, of stupid reasons being given as to why our traditional celebrations must be changed or cancelled.

The Guy Fawkes bonfire is the latest victim of the anti-smoke culture. In Slough, the local council has launched a "Cleaner, Safer, Greener Slough" campaign, to make people think responsibly about the environment. Having done so, they've cancelled the bonfire that was to have graced their 5 November celebrations, arguing it would be "hypocritical" to have a clean-air campaign and a lot of dirty smoke. They cancelled it last year as well, replacing it with a trampoline act, which, let's face it, isn't the same. This year they'll have fireworks, but next year will doubtless substitute some coloured ribbons on string. A spokesman said: "There is a lot that goes into the fire. It takes a lot of time to burn and it all goes up into the air." These people miss nothing, do they?

Anti-smoking ban march at Bristol a success

Last Saturday, there was a demonstration march against the smoking ban in Bristol. Although the number of marchers was small, the message went out loud and clear that not everyone is in favour of the ban or believes all the lies about second hand /passive smoking.
Some people joined the march as it made its way through the streets and there were quite a few shouts of encouragement or drivers hooted as they passed. Many leaflets were given out promoting freedom2choose.info, a group opposing the ban and asking for smoking sections to return to pubs with adequate ventilation. The march ended near the council offices and was reported on in several local newspapers, as well as local ITV and BBC tv and radio.
The numbers of marchers may have been small but it's a start and from little acorns?.. Credit to all of then for making a stand.
There may well be another demonstration early next year and details will be put here once known.

Any Person Found Celebrating Xmas Will be Liable to a Fine or a Term of  Imprisonment by Order of New Labour

Impossible? Think again. It has already happened in England. In 1644 during the English Civil War the Puritan faction in Parliament decided to flex their fundamentalist religious power felt by bringing in laws to ban Christmas. They objected to the binge drinking and the debauchery that accompanied the revelries of Christmas. But the Puritans also objected to the name Christ Mass which had a ring of Catholicism to it. Now this was offensive to the Protestants that were now in power. So the name was changed to Christ Tide and was only for one day.of  FASTING!!!
Oliver Cromwell (one of Gordon's heroes) and his gang, showed that once in power they can do as they please. New Labour has done nothing but bring in new laws since they came to power. Gordon Brown has strong puritanical views on just about everything hedonistic, such as alcohol and tobacco.
Cromwell's ban was no idle threat. For the 'sin' of celebrating Christ's birthday on the 25th December in the traditional manner, there were penalties. A man or woman could be fined and put in the stocks. No one was allowed to take a holiday. Government officers, sheriffs and justices of the peace forced shops & markets to open, and business to carry on as usual. In London, soldiers patrolled the streets and seized any food they suspected of being stored for Christmas celebrations and anyone holding or attending a church service faced penalties. For 18 years, England was a barren country, without Christmas celebrations.
Be warned, as we have said over and over, it is not just about smoking. Everything that can bring total subservience will be used. Brown's vision is far more severe than George Orwell's ever was. He has no ideas of his own, just a whole load of other peoples, Hitler, Musolini, Stalin all rolled up in one bundle of controls. Why? Ask your MP via our MP's button at the top of our page.
The point of this story is the fact that any thing  can be made a criminal offence, any person can be turned into a criminal overnight by simply doing something they have been doing, quite legally for years, and paying tax on .i.e smoking a cigarette!!
Crime is on the increase, we hear stated continually. Of course it bloody is. New crimes are thought up daily. Since  New Labour have been in power, they have invented thousands of new crimes. Sooner or later one will encompass you. It's the old 'divide & rule' bit. All Labour seem to have done since coming to power is laws & wars.
The populace is still living in fear of losing their jobs and homes..They are being ruled basically by one man and his little band of chosen 'Yes' men such as Jack Straw and co. Why the hell we have the rest of the MP's on the taxpayers payroll I really don't know. They are simply there as a smokescreen to make it look like a democratic parliament. They have no say in anything. So long as they get their cash they are not going to rock the boat. Is there anyone out there who can honestly say that their MP is doing a good job and is representing their problems and wishes in parliament? I doubt it. If they were to watch the parliament channel on TV they would see their man asking silly questions in an empty chamber. "Would the right honourable man please tell me why my constituents are having all their rights taken away by this party?" they stand and blubber. You would think someone would tell them that the right honorable gentleman had left the house 2 days ago! You only get 30mins a week at PM question time and thats just about shcoolboy banter and jeering. Then it's all back to one of the many bars for a smoke and a drink and to work out how much they can claim for second homes and the like when much of the country is wondering if they can get or keep one home. Thats what takes up most of your MP's time.Getting all the perks of the job and making sure not to rock the boat. Who's fault is it? YOURS. YOU ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN AND JUST THINK WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT. Thats what Brown & co have done to the populace. Dumbed them down just by showing them that he doesn't care what they think. So long as they keep paying their taxes and fines

New laws on illegal immigrants say that you will get a £10,000 fine if you unwittingly employ an illegal immnigrant and unlimited fine and imprisonment if you knowingly employ them. Rightly so but, does this apply to all those illegal security guards the Home Secretary tried to cover up? What do you think. Ha, they say the media have moved on from that, so don't ask silly questions just do as we say, not as we do. And so it goes, every one against each other, the smokers and the non smokers, the workers and the immigrants, doing the jobs cheaper, and worst of all, the ones who say it doesn't affect me, the ones who sit on the fence, who don't yet realise, that if you sit on a fence you get splinters in your arse!!

First they came for the Jews & I did not speak out because I was not a Jew

Then they came for the communists and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for me - and by then there was no one left to speak out for me

The German anti-Nazi activist, Pastor Martin Niemoller

So just sit back people and let your children and your children's children's freedom just drift away

? Another smokescreen.

In the lead up to July 1st and the ban on smoking in confined spaces, the newspapers and various spokesmen repeatedly said that it would be good for the pub trade. Hoardes on non-smokers would be flocking to the smoke free pubs having stayed away before. Sales were going to go up and there was no way that trade would suffer.
This was said even though the early figures from Scotland and Ireland showed that this wasn't true, but why should that bother anyone? Cover the truth in a smokescreen of lies and the public and the publicans will believe it. The ban itself was based on lies. It was frequently quoted that the majority of the population wanted a total ban on smoking in pubs despite the biggest surveys stating to the contrary. It was, and is, even more quoted that second hand smoke is a killer with even 30 minutes exposure to someone's smoke having a detrimental effect to your health. Again, completely untrue as the biggest surveys based on the most extensive research showed that there is no increased risk to your health. The World Health Organisation's own study showed no danger and they were one of the big drivers behind the ban, so they tried to bury the report. So a couple of misleading facts about the pub trade wouldn't be too much of a problem.
The truth is now emerging and below are some links to articles saying how the trade has been hit in Ireland, Wales and Scotland, as well as the bingo halls.
The first one though is of a pub closing in Chazy Heath,Reading and the sign on the door says it all.
With an extra cold winter reported, it is safe to assume that smokers will be less likely to put up with standing outside in the cold and rain and may prefer to stay at home, thus hitting the pub trade profits even more. How many more pubs will have shut by the Spring?

And do the Government care about the pubs closing, which results in job losses? Do they care that smokers have to brave the elements to smoke their legal and heavily taxed product, even the OAPs who may have served and fought for their country? Do they care about the reported increase in date rape drugs being put into unattended drinks? Do they care that the only social life some people have may have been wrecked as they can no longer smoke in a pub or bingo hall? Some disabled smokers are also affected, no longer going out as they feel a burden to be trundled out in their wheelchairs by a helper when it's cigarette time. Do the Government care about any of this? No, they don't yet but when it's voting time they will be made to care.

Gordon Brown - our unelected leader...unfortunately!

The "Brown bounce" showed no sign of ending and the new Prime Minister enjoyed continuing popularity, until the change of heart over a general election, and the "Brown bounce" became "The Brown Bottler". Part of his popularity was off the back of 10 years as the Chancellor of the Exchequer where he built a reputation for financial prudence.

His speech at the Labour Party Conference appeared to some as if he was a new leader for a new party. Promises were made to deal with immigration, the NHS and street crime and many appear to forget that this is the party who have been in power for the last 10 years. Couldn't more have been done in that time? He has also promised reviews into 24 hours drinking and reclassifying cannabis despite that changes were only made a couple of years ago. The figures show that drunken street crime has fallen in this time and there has certainly been no upsurge in problems from smoking cannabis. So why tamper? It couldn't be that he wishes to continue the type of policies that have seen civil liberties eroded more under New Labour than under any other government.

The conference at the time was judged as a success and Brown & Labour's popularity rose in the polls (until the election fiasco) but if you look around, therewere at least 2 items of great significance .

Firstly, many items of debate were stifled as dozens of motions submitted for discussion were rejected. Austin Mitchell, labour MP said it was "crazy" that motions on important topics could not be talked about. Another MP, John McDonnell said Mr.Brown was "closing down debate" in the party, cutting him off from its members and the wider population. Out of 120 motions submitted, 96 were turned down. If free debate is not allowed at the Labour Party conference, what hope is there for ordinary people to have their say and be heard?

Secondly, one newspaper studied Brown's speech and found it littered with lifts from speeches made by Democrat politicians in the US, although this claim was denied.

Please read the relevant article below and make up your own mind. To me, it shows a lack of originality to rehash other people's speeches and it's bordering on dishonest to not come clean about it.

And then the election issue hit him and hit him hard. His repeated claims that it had nothing to do with the polls fooled no-one. His continuing to ignore claims for a referendum over Europe has also done him no good at all and fairly quickly, Brown did not appear to be what many thought he was. The referendum had been promised but it appears the Labour manifesto for the last election stood for nothing as another promise was broken, similar to the smoking ban which was to exempt pubs that don't serve food and private members clubs.

He seemed to have emerged from the Northern Rock fiasco unscathed, despite it being the first run on a bank here for over 100 years with some of the trouble going back to his time as Chancellor. But the man no longer appears untouchable and even at the conference, he may have felt a little uncomfortable to see the pensioners protesting outside, reminding him of how he dipped into the pension pot to the tune of billions of pounds - a decision that has affected the pensions of many and seen some company pension schemes collapse. But overall this seems largely forgotten.

Similarly, it appears to be forgotten that he voted strongly for the war in Iraq and would have been closely involved in the lies to the country that influenced public opinion. Even now, some reports state that he may be considering backing the USfor possible precision air strikes against Iran. He certainly refuses to categorically rule it out. Imagine the probable consequences of that!

Another episode that seems to never be mentioned is that it was Brown, in the early days in his post as Chancellor, who sold about half of the UK gold reserves. Not only did he sell them against expert advice but he sold them at the wrong time and in the wrong way therefore costing the UK billions. The low price the gold was sold for is still referred to as "The Brown Price" in gold dealers circles. Financial prudence at its worst.

Many of his budgets were announced as tax cutting whereas the truth showed he gave with one hand and took more away with another. He should be better known forthe 66 underhanded stealth taxes that were introduced.

Another example of Brown not coming clean is the Smith Institute, named after the late John Smith and describing itself as "an independent think-tank". This is an established and operating charity and it hosted over 150 meetings at 11, Downing Street while Brown was Chancellor. It comprises of trusted Brown advisers and meets for policy brain storming sessions. Figures filed with the Charity Commission show that the Institute has received more than 2 million pounds in 7 years, a figure that grew as expectations rose that Brown would become Prime Minister. Complaints have been made to the Charity Commission that it breached the rules governing tax-exempt charities that are barred from political activities and the Conservatives have also complained after a subsidiary group held a meeting there on how to defeat David Cameron. Key figures in the Institute deny that it is specifically Brownite in its thinking and denies wrongdoings. In December 2005, Mr.Brown's office said the then Chancellor had "no financial nor any formal relationship" with the think-tank. Hard to believe with the choice of venue. Harder to believe when a large chunk of Brown's fighting fund for the leadership campaign came from donations from those in the Institute, and harder still when it employed Ed Balls, a Brown right hand man, in 2004/5. Just for good measure, the writer of the Brown speech at the conference, lifted from previous speeches made in the US, was Bob Shrum who was paid by the Smith Institute to advise him on political strategy.

The eight month investigation is still going on. Again, see the articles below.

And then it came to light that the election that never was cost Labour over a million pounds in unnecessary preparations. What a waste of a lot of money.

One million pounds spent on the election that never was

We, the people, may be finally waking up to the man but what do people who actually know him say about him. Below are excerpts from articles in The Times, Time magazine and from ePolitix.com

Mr Brown's admirers have described him as intellectually awesome, physically impressive with broad shoulders, morally impeccable and seriously committed. Critics call him dour and a "control freak" possessed of "Stalinist ruthlessness
The criticism in 1998, allegedly by Mr Blair's former spin doctor Alastair Campbell, that Mr Brown was "psychologically flawed" hurt then and still echoes now. It has long been observed that Mr Brown does not have Mr Blair's easy charisma and nobody seems sure how the British people will warm to him.
People who meet Mr Brown say that while he is fun and gregarious with his infamous small inner circle and others he trusts, he can be awkward with strangers. Some find that endearing, an antidote to the vacuous smarminess of many modern politicians, but some in the Labour party will be anxious. For all the problems Mr Blair accrued during his premiership, he never lost his ability to work a room
As partygoers at Labour's Manchester congress discovered, Brown doesn't do small talk. In interviews, too, he repudiates seductive sound bites in favour of considered responses that can leave eyelids drooping as the 10th subclause gives way to an 11th. Presentation is important, he concedes in an interview with Time

Former Cabinet colleague Charles Clarke branded Brown a "control freak," while Lord Turnbull, a top civil servant and Brown's permanent secretary at the Treasury for 4 years, remarked of his management style at the Treasury "You cannot help but admire the sheer Stalinist ruthlessness of it all." He added that Brown had a "very cynical view of mankind and his colleagues". Of discussions with Cabinet colleagues, he said Brown's "view is that it is just not worth it and 'they will get what I decide'."
Mr Clarke is the ideal person to ask the question. He has worked alongside Mr Brown in Cabinet (to say he, or indeed anybody else, works with Mr Brown is laughable and that, of course, is part of the problem) and knows his strengths and weaknesses.
In our pages today, he is vicious about the Chancellor - "deep weaknesses...can't work with people ...totally uncollegiate...an image of slipperiness...not a risk taker...deluded..."
Baroness Morriss of Yardley who worked alongside Brown when she was Secretary of State for Education said "Gordon was the last Cabinet colleague you'd have thought of suggesting a drink with".

David Blunkett said Brown "is so driven that he sometimes barely sleeps or eats. I...was bemoaning that I had only had 5 hours sleep and Gordon thought that was rather a lot. He's politics, politics, politics." Proof of commitment & dedication or obsessive?

Neil Kinnock labels him not "Capability Brown" but "Justice Brown".

Craig Hoy, writing on ePolitix, said former colleagues of Brown say he can be stiff, or just plain rude to those outside his tribal inner circle.

Mary Ann Sieghart writing in the Times summed him up as "impatient with people he doesn't rate and bears long and bitter grudges against those he believes have crossed him, or even disagreed with him. Brown is notorious for his low threshold (for boredom) and when pressed for decisions on areas he finds tedious, he procrastinates."

Nick Robinson, political editor for the BBC ended his article in the Times by saying "Those hoping for an end to Mr.Blair's wars or a libertarian shift away from Mr.Blair's laws are likely to be disappointed." "Mr Brown's ideas have always been shrouded - sometimes by baffling jargon, occasionally by tactical silence, always by a tendency to work in secret with a few close friends..."

In closing, his parliamentary record makes interesting reading. Based on statistics from www.publicwhip.org.uk , his voting record since 2001 shows the following:-

He has never voted for a transparent Parliament
He has never voted for equal gay rights
He voted very strongly for the Iraq war
He voted against investigating the Iraq war
He voted very strongly for ID cards
He voted very strongly for student top up fees
He voted very strongly for replacing Trident

Overall, he has voted in 18% of all votes held since 2001 - well below average for MPs.

Gordon Brown - our leader - but hopefully not for too much longer.

"Medical lies" - always question what you read .

Elsewhere on this site, we have said that the argument that second hand smoke is harmful is false & that the biggest study failed to show a link between it and an increased risk of lung cancer. We have said it is a falsehood, and that even the World Health Organisation's own study was buried because it too couldn't show the results that they wanted it to. They are partially behind the crackdown on cigarette smoking in the UK as well as other organizations such as the big pharmaceutical companies who rake in millions of pounds from smoking cessation therapies. The government have done a deal with some of the largest of these companies and receive money for the NHS from these nicotine replacement sales. So everyone, except the smokers, are happy. If a smoker dares to state that the studies often quoted and accepted as medicial fact are wrong, baseless and basically lies, they are seen as a crank and refusing to accept what is taken to be a truth.

We say 2 things to this.

Firstly, history shows that sometimes the best tactic is to tell a bigger lie and tell it repeatedly until it becomes accepted as fact. Every time it is told, a little bit of it sticks in the minds of the public and it is no longer questioned
.
Here's an excerpt from an article by John Henry Westen.

Well known former abortionist Bernard Nathanson, the co-founder and first president of National Abortion Rights Action League, after leaving the pro-abortion movement, confessed: "Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public. The number of women dying from illegal abortions was around 200-250 annually. The figure we constantly fed to the media was 10,000. These false figures took root in the consciousness of Americans, convincing many that we needed to crack the abortion law."

Now fast forward to recent articles on the TV and news, many on the dangers of alcohol and obesity, all designed to soften us up before new rules come in force - further restrictions on our freedom to choose what we eat and drink.

For the last 20 years, it has been the accepted fact that men mustn't drink more than 21 units of alcohol and women no more than 14. These figures came from medical experts, so they must be right, surely? But what if, 20 years later, the experts admit that they basically made the figures up. Plucked them out the air! But we believed it, we accepted it as fact. As we are starting to do now about obesity and the national epidemic that is going to get worse and worse over the next couple of decades. It has had so much media coverage recently, it just has to be true, doesn't it? Please read the articles below to see how facts have been pulled out of the air for alcohol consumption and for obesity, assumptions have been made & figures twisted to get the dramatic end results that make the headlines & make us accept what is to come. I wonder how long before the truth also comes out regarding the junk science over passive smoking?

Jack "Flip Flop" Straw - "What a tart"

Jack Straw, now the Justice Minister, is one of the great survivors of NuLabour, possibly due to knowing when to change his mind over large issues and when to change sides.

Although he joined the Labour Party aged 14, he later became the left wing leader of the National Union of Students at the height of political unrest at student campuses after leaving Leeds University. When he first started at Leeds in 1964, he joined the Labour Society. In 1966, he was elected Chairman of the society. His first act at the annual general meeting was to change the name of the society to the Socialist Society to show that they no longer supported Labour.

He has even shrugged off revelations about his left-wing past - including that infamous trip to to Chile as a student in 1966. He insists he was not there to sit at the feet of Marxist opposition leader Salvador Allende.
Recently released official papers show British diplomats were so concerned with the young Straw at the time, that they cabled London to warn foreign office officials that their future boss was a "troublemaker... acting with malice aforethought" and accused him of "childish politicking".
Well, we'll let him off and put it down to his youth.

He later became a political advisor to Barbara Castle in 1974. At the time, Harold Wilson was the Labour leader with a tiny majority and he was worried about Edward Heath and Jeremy Thorpe forming a Conservative/Liberal coalition government. Castle was in charge of the Department of Social Security and she was asked to look into the personal social security file of Norman Scott, allegedly the boyfriend of Jeremy Thorpe to look for any potentially damaging material. Straw was given the job but reported back that the file was missing. Subsequent leaks to the press implicated Straw had done the leaking and he still refuses to talk about it. The journalist Barrie Penrose states this to be the case. Straw was also fingerprinted by police in 1976 in a second enquiry over a leak on Child benefit, and as to who had leaked sensitive Cabinet papers. Newsnight, the BBC programme, have taped interviews with Harold Wilson who confirmed that Straw thought his career would be finished if his name came out.

Let's fast forward to more recent times.

His statements on crime - such as expressing zero tolerance for "winos, addicts and squeegee merchants" - have regularly seen him attacked as illiberal. How embarrassing for him that in 1997, he had his own brush with youth crime, when it was revealed his 17-year old son William had sold cannabis to a newspaper reporter. He took his son to the police station to face up to his crime and was painted as a typical father trying to do the best for his child. But would he have done this if the newspaper (The Daily Mirror) hadn't threatened to go public with the information?
More embarrassment followed. In 2000, Straw's brother - also named William - was fined for indecently assaulting a 16 year old girl.
Reportedly, there was a bit of flip-flopping over the Iraq War.
As foreign secretary, Straw was, of necessity, signed up to war in Iraq, but he fashioned for himself an ingenious get-out in case things went wrong. On the eve of war, when there was no realistic chance of turning back, he sent Blair a confidential memo suggesting that, after all, maybe Britain shouldn't join the Americans in invading. This has allowed him to distance himself from a conflict in which he played an intimate role.

But the man himself, although responsible for sending troops to fight in Iraq, is the son of a conscientious objector and who avoided military service during World War 2 and he refused to join the Combined Cadet Force at his school in Essex as he said he was a conscientious objector too.

During the past decade, much has been said of Labour MPs either being a "Blairite" or a "Brownite" with quite a gulf between the 2 groups. No problem for Straw. He was Blair's campaign manager 13 years ago, then did the same for Brown this year. Is that why he's still got a good job? Flip-flop man strikes again, as he did on changing his views over Europe, turning from the euro-sceptic he was in the 1980s.

At the recent Labour conference, Straw announced that the government may introduce legislation to protect "have a go heroes". This has not only upset the police but has drawn criticism from those who say why was nothing similar ever mentioned when he was the Home Secretary from 1997 to 2001 - just another ploy to attract the floating voter when there was talk of an election?

Mr.Straw likes to remind us of his personal heroics in tackling muggers and burglars. Looking deeper into his past exploits we found a couple of other examples.
Quoting from an article in The Times:-

Jack the lad
- Mr Straw's cuttings file brought more occurrences of his crime-busting exploits
- Neighbours recall an 11-year-old Straw in the late 1950s berating an ice-cream seller for illegally sounding his chimes after 7pm.
- Mr Straw, described by one neighbour as "a toffee-nosed boy nobody wanted to play with", said he did not remember the event
- In 1999, as Home Secretary, he accosted a youth who was spitting from a Blackburn railway bridge. "I thought, 'You can't just stand and watch this'." Mr Straw said. "He gave me quite a lot of lip, but after a while he calmed down."
- Later that day he was forced to admit that he was accompanied by armed protection officers. Mr Straw’s spokesman said that he did not remember the event.

Looking a little to the future, Straw is expected to rubber stamp at the next EU meeting in November, a law that will pass without debate. Under new european co-operation, european authorities – including government departments, police and councils - can demand intimate background details on UK citizens, whether as victim, witness or suspect in a crime. This could include minor traffic offences. Until now, a court order would have to have been obtained and worries exist that this sensitive data could fall into the wrong hands.

In closing, it was Tony Blair who was reported to have said "What a tart" at the end of a phone call with Straw. For once, I agree with him.

What's next?

A lot of people feel that the smoking legislation that came into force on July 1st was over the top and unnecessary but some others took this as an opportunity to go even further. The law was mainly about smoking in enclosed spaces - so why did British Rail rush to ban smoking from all station platforms, even uncovered ones, quoting a bye law from the 1965? This now means that it is "illegal" to stand on a deserted, windy, open platform and smoke while you're waiting for your delayed train.

There were exemptions for hotels to have designated smoking rooms - but again, most of the hotel chains went ahead and banned it from all rooms. Hospitals and councils joined in, banning smoking from all outside areas including open air car parks. Some councils now ban smoking within 5m of the buildings.

Even football grounds got involved and smoking is banned from all grounds bar one - good old Halifax Town still allow it in certain parts of the stadium. A spokesman from Carlisle United, who banned a supporter for the whole season for smoking, said " New Football League rules, implemented ahead of this season, mean that stadiums around the country must remain smoke free". A spokesman for the Football League however said that it was up to individual clubs to manage smoking issues. It was neither national law nor a law imposed by the Football League, simply further examples of organisations deciding to take the over the top laws even further. Several other clubs are also taking away season tickets from repeat offenders.

Our worry is, where will it end? What else is being considered to get in the way of us living our lives as we choose. As our Government gets bolder in curbing our personal freedoms, it seems to encourage others - doctors, senior police officers, judges etc - to come up with more and more things that they think need attention. The smoking box has been ticked as done, but further restrictions will come. You may see below, ASH in New Zealand and Australia aren't happy yet and now are pushing for both places to be absolutely tobacco free by 2017 and cigarettes won't even be sold! Food and alcohol are the next targets here as well as the growth of databases that will hold too many personal details about us.

Listed below are a few examples, some very likely to happen, some already here and some a possibility for the future.

Is Britain going crazy? Is this Gordon Brown's "Vision" ?

Below are a few links to newspaper articles from the last few days.
Despite most people being worried about street crimes, shootings and stabbings, it appears there are nastier elements of society that need cracking down on - kids, OAPs and smokers.
The common denominator here is going for the softer targets, especially those that generate income from fines. And if they are not being clamped down on, the very young and very old are being put to good use to enforce the law.

Folic acid in bread...because they know what's good for us. But do they?
The start of "mass medication"?

Soon the Government to decide if it will be mandatory for folic acid to be added to bread and/or flour. Should ministers decide to back the recommendation, it would amount to the first mandatory fortification of food since the second world war
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) have said that adding folic acid to bread, or the flour that goes into bread, will help prevent babies being born each year with spina bifida, a condition which leaves the spinal column exposed creating life long disability. In the US, flour has been fortified with folic acid since 1996 and it is reported there has been a 20% drop of spina bifida incidences.
It is said in the UK that there are between 700 and 900 pregnancies a year affected by neural tube defects. Fortifying bread could prevent about 160 cases a year here.
So folic acid is a good thing then?
Unfortunately not.
A team from the Institute of Food research have said that our livers can only deal with a certain amount of folic acid before releasing the rest, undiluted, in to the blood and that this could create major problems for people already in poor health..
It could cause problems for those being treated for leukaemia & arthritis, men with a history of bowel cancer, elderly people with poor vitamin B status and women being treated for ectopic pregnancies.
They warn the full impact of putting folic acid into food could only become apparent in 20 years
Folic acid is known to feed cancerous cells and help them grow. It has been predicted that adding this to our foods could lead to 3000 new cases of colon cancer and put as many as 150,000 elderly people at risk of anaemia and memory problems. It has also been linked to breast cancer.
This has been put forward as the advice to pregnant women to take supplements to avoid birth defects fails to work so this has been suggested, with the recommendation that it becomes mandatory.

Dr. Robert Thiel - a naturopathic physician, as well as a licensed naturopathic scientist and science editor for the American Naturopathic Medical Association Monitor wrote the following:-
"Folic acid is a synthetic folate form." Folic acid is chemically known as pteroylglutamic acid (PGA) and is a crystalline substance (no food vitamins are naturally crystalline in structure). Folate, once known as vitamin B9, exists in foods, while crystalline folic acid does not."
A 2004 paper from the British Medical Journal confirmed what many natural health professionals have known all along--since folic acid is unnatural, and the body cannot fully convert large amounts of it into usable folate, this artificial substance can be absorbed and may have unknown negative consequences in the human body. One of the biggest scientific concerns about folic acid is that, even in amounts close to official daily recommendations, some of it is absorbed in unreduced form into the bloodstream with potentially dangerous results.

So, here we go again if the Government agree with the suggestion to make this mandatory. While we agree with the intention of reducing babies born with spina bifida, do we need to take the chance with what could be more costly longer term with the problems it causes? What happened to choice? Are pregnant women really that incapable of taking a tablet that could give them the folic acid that may help them? And do the rest of us have to put up with having our food tampered with, maybe at the cost of our health?

Further violence arising from the smoking ban

Following on from the tragic shooting of boxer James Oyebola there have unfortunately been other cases of violence coming from the July 1st ban.

A pub landlord in Bolton was attacked and left with a broken broken leg after he asked a woman to take her cigarette outside. She was actually almost outside as she had left the pub and was smoking in the porch. She was asked to move to the beer garden but she refused and became abusive. Her boyfriend then got involved, pushing the landlord and knocking him to the ground, breaking his leg in the process.

At a pub in Worthing, a former marine was asked to stop smoking in the beer garden by a barman one afternoon, being told the garden was closed as there was live music at the pub at the time. He complied and moved to the street in front of the pub but the same member of the bar staff then told him that he was not allowed to drink in the street. The barman was then punched and headbutted several times.

Most recently in Dorset, two pensioners and a pub landlord were taken to hospital after trouble flared when one of a gang of teenagers was asked to leave the pub for smoking. Once the gang was outside, a fight started leaving the landlord unconscious with a broken jaw and another involved with a broken arm.

In Dartmoor, a prison officer had his jaw broken after being attacked by a prisoner after telling him he couldn't light up in a non smoking area.

A deaf man was beaten up at Cardiff central bus station. He had been smoking and was asked by someone to stop, but being deaf, he didn't hear the request. He was then knocked to the floor, kicked and punched.

No-one condones violence for any reason but it it easy to understand the frustration of a smoker being told you can't smoke here, or here, or here. That are probably other incidences of smoking related violence and if you see any others reported in the press, please let us know.

The incidents already mentioned happened after the new laws came in on 1st July but if you go back a little further, there was the sad case of the nurse stabbed to death when she had to go outside for a cigarette. Had she had an inside smoking room to use, she would still be alive today. And this is a similar case to the Canadian backpacker who fell to her death in Edinburgh. She had gone on to the roof to smoke as the hostel she was staying in was totally non smoking.

It's early days here in the UK and the incidents are growing. There's a link below to an article that quotes 10% of hospitality staff who say they have been threatened or assaulted since the smoking ban came in.If you look at the US where smoking bans have been in place for a lot longer, the list of attacks on smokers is much longer.

People power can work. Students get HSBC to back down

Sometimes we feel "but what can I do?" about decisions made by big organisations. Sometimes we feel powerless.

Recently, the HSBC Bank changed their minds about offering 3 year interest free overdrafts to students just graduating from university and stopped making them interest free.

The Students Union got organised, on Facebook and elsewhere, spoke as one and made their feelings clear.

The result? HSBC has had a rethink and the interest has been removed. Victory to the students.

Remember - it can be done!

Home Information Packs (HIPS) - another smokescreen

From September 2007, if you are selling a 3 and 4 bedroomed house, you will be required to put together a HIP to supposedly help the buyer and make the sale quicker and easier. These HIPs will contain a wealth of information including number & size of rooms and whether double glazing, patios, conservatiories or extensions have been added. They will also contain an Energy Efficiency certificate. This on average costs the seller 500-700 pounds and needs an approved inspector to come into your home, look at everything everywhere and take photos where necessary.

Apart from the intrusion, nothing wrong in that, is there?

Well, it is debatable if these packs are of any help to the buyer or whether they speed up the sale as is stated.

The scheme initially was for 4 bedroomed houses only and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) reported an average drop of 51% in houses in that category put up for sale in August 2007 compared with the previous year. They pointed the finger at HIPS. Also, they and the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) have said the packs are a waste of time and money that would slow the selling process and land the consumer with an unnecessary bill. People already are getting over the need to have one by turning the third bedroom into a study, others cancel the pack after it has been ordered (therefore staying within the law) and others prefer to take the risk of having to pay a 200 pound fine (in the unlikely event they are caught by Trading Standards) which is far cheaper than paying for the pack in the first place.

But where's the smokescreen?

Apart from the fact that opponents say HIPS will be a 1 billion pound industry that earns the Government a lot in VAT to the Treasury, it will also help the Government to meet a European directive that requires all buildings built, bought, sold or rented out to have an energy performance certificate available by 2009.

And here's the smokescreen.....

The information gathered will be placed on a Government database which is available to inspectors setting council tax levels. The Valuation Office Agency already has access to detailed information on homes from the Land Registry as well as that on the online estate agent Rightmove. Now it has asked for access to the new HIP database. Greg Hands, Conservative MP for Hammersmith & Fulham claims that there is potential after 25 years, when the majority of homes have changed hands at least once, a national database containing information on the country's housing stock could be used to apply even more taxes and influence Council Tax decisions. By 2010, the database is expected to contain details on 10 million homes.

The translation of all this is that the Government, appearing to be ever so helpful to speed up selling a home, have created jobs for thousands of inspectors, put a sizeable new bill on the vendor, will benefit from the VAT on the pack purchases, have yet another database to store information on about us and will have extra ammunition against us to put up Council Taxes.

Shadow Local Goverment Secretary Eric Pickles said "Labour's plans for HIPS are nothing less than a home information tax..... it's just a stealthier way of conducting council tax revaluation by the back door. You pay the state to inspect your home and help the taxman hike your Council tax".

TONY ...You really could have PICKED a better leader for us!!

Now if I wanted a tipster, Gordon would be my man. He certainly looks like he could pick a winner or two!!! But as a Prime Minister I feel he leaves a lot to be desired. Especially in the etiquette field!

We have been given information about Gordon's long term feelings on Tobacco & Alcohol. We are obviously being governed in a very childish way. As an 11 year old child his views on this subject were formed by listening to a sermon by his father in the Presbyterian mode. I don't know about you, the voter, but I feel very perturbed by this. Not being a religious person I have no idea of this type of indoctrination. Do all religions have the same views? Or are we being governed by a biased view or at the very least a blinkered one?

Anyway here is the story Make up your own minds (ALTHOUGH MAKING PERSONAL DECISIONS IS FROWNED UPON BY NEW LABOUR).

EXTRACT FROM DAILY TELEGRAPH - .....Gordon and his brothers opened a tuck shop in the garage of the manse to raise money for refugees. Naturally, Gordon looked after the money. At the age of 11, when most of his chums were reading comics, he and John founded The Gazette, whose proud boast was that it was Scotland's only newspaper sold in aid of African refugees. The 10-page paper, with a circulation of a few hundred, was produced on a duplicating machine, sold for three pence (later sixpence), and was inspired by one of their father's sermons. The Gazette became the vehicle for the burgeonng political philosophy of our longest serving Chancellor and provided the first glimpse of his now famous Presbyterian streak.

In April 1962, aged 11, he wrote an article about a church campaign in favour of television commercials against the twin demons of alcohol and tobacco. Gordon concluded his piece with a typically opinionated flourish. "Let us hope that this plan will be a success and that the sale of drink and cigarettes to the younger and older generation will fall when these (commercials) against drink and cigarettes are shown".

Well personally speaking I wish he had read the Beano & Dandy like normal kids at that age, and had learned some manners concerning picking noses in public. Gordon you are not my GP nor my MP and I am saddled with you as my PM Thanks to Tony's bad picking (not as bad as your dirty habit) but I most certainly did not choose you for my salvation or my preacher. Be satisfied with being PM & Chancellor at the same time! But not for very much longer I hope. New Labour is very much like the Bible all spin & parables. To put it politely UNTRUTHS.

What has this got to do with smoking you may ask. Well its the whole picture of the way this country has been run since New Labour were elected, on a pack of lies they called a manifesto. We are rapidly being taken down the road of no return. Totalitarianism. As we have repeatedly said, the smokescreen of the smoking ban is just another of our Civil Liberties that are being eroded by this communistic Government. Even the European block peoples that live in this country are saying, " it has taken us 60 years to break out of communism in our country and now we are being taken back into it in this country". But in Russia they could at least have a smoke while they suffered!! So read on and hopefully we will convince you not to vote for Labour anymore. Or at least not New Labour & maybe, just maybe, the other parties will start to fight this lot and do what they are supposed to do. Fight for your freedoms.

HYPOCRITES !!!

So, there are rules in place for us ordinary people and another set for the others. Charles Kennedy, voted for a total smoking ban in pubs and clubs and then got caught smoking on a train shortly after July 1st. He at least was reprimanded.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article2039675.ece

But what about those in the European Parliament Bureau, covering France, Belgium and Luxembourg. They brought in a total ban and then 43 days later, they changed their minds. The reason - because it "interfered wiith the smooth running of parliamentary and administrative business". We of course must comply with the laws. They can change things when it suits. Please see the article link below.

http://dev.ersnet.org/356-european-parliament-scraps-smoking-ban-after-only-six-weeks.htm

And then there's Prince Harry whose grandmother signed the law to make it official. You'd think he would comply to set a good example. Click on the article link below to see if he did.....

http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/19218

And lastly, our decent MPs in the House of Commons. Last I heard, they can still smoke in the bars in the House despite stopping the rest of the country, and now they have passed a decree that that allows them to go to the front of any queue - in the restaurants, bars and even for the lift. Shows what they think of ordinary people......
